Smooth Talk Leads to a Dead End
To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
Proverbs 2:16
Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
Proverbs 2:17
For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
Proverbs 2:18
None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
Proverbs 2:19
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
strange, foreign, turned-aside — someone outside the bond she owes; “estranged” in the oldest sense, a woman who’s wandered off her own covenant
-
smooth, slick — to flatter; the same root used for smooth stones. Words polished so slick they slide right past your guard
Zarah doesn’t just mean “a woman you don’t know.” It means someone who has drifted off the path she herself was bound to — the next verse says it straight: she’s forgotten her own covenant. And chalaq is the same word you’d use for a smooth stone or a slippery rock. Her words aren’t rough or obviously fake. They’re smooth on purpose, built to slide past the part of you that would normally say no.
IIWhat this actually means
This isn’t just a warning about one kind of sin. It’s a warning about smooth words in general — the pitch that sounds too easy, the person who tells you exactly what you want to hear, the deal that’s been sanded down so you don’t feel any of the rough edges you should be feeling. Verse 18 doesn’t say her path might lead somewhere bad. It says her house already leans toward death, right now, before you ever walk in. And verse 19 is the hard part: this isn’t a detour you can just walk back from whenever you feel like it. Some roads don’t loop back to the main road. Wisdom’s whole move here isn’t “be strong enough to resist in the moment” — it’s “see the smoothness for what it is before you’re standing in the house.”
IIIObey it today
Today, if someone’s pitch, text, or flirt feels unusually smooth — no friction, no hard questions, everything easy — stop and ask out loud: “what’s this costing me that I’m not seeing?” Don’t move until you can answer it.
Before noon, name one relationship or deal in your life right now where you’re getting exactly what you want to hear and nothing else. Bring it to one other person today and ask them what they actually think.
If you’re already walking toward a door you know you shouldn’t open today — a message, a meeting, a browser tab — close it now, not “after this one thing.” Tell someone you trust before the day’s over.
PrayerGod, when the smooth talk starts today, slow me down enough to see the net before I’m standing in the house.
Keep this in your chest
“To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;”
