Don't Say "Tomorrow" When You Have It Today
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
Proverbs 3:27
Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
Proverbs 3:28
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
to withhold, hold back, deny — a deliberate choice to keep something from someone
-
tomorrow, the next day, time to come — pushing something past today
Mana isn’t “forgetting” or “being busy.” It’s a willed action — you decide to hold it back. The verse isn’t talking about accidents. It’s talking about the moment you catch yourself choosing not to help when you could. Machar is just “tomorrow” — but in this verse it’s the excuse word. The man has what’s owed sitting right there in his hand, and he still says “machar” instead of handing it over now. The Hebrew makes the gap plain: you HAVE it right now, you just won’t GIVE it right now.
IIWhat this actually means
This isn’t about being generous with money you don’t have. It’s about the money, the favor, the answer, or the apology you DO have sitting in your hand right now — and you’re stalling anyway. Maybe it’s awkward. Maybe you just don’t feel like dealing with it today. Solomon’s not buying it. If it’s in your power right now, “tomorrow” is a lie you’re telling yourself to buy comfort.
IIIObey it today
If you owe someone money, an answer, or a favor and you have what it takes to settle it right now, do it before lunch — don’t send the “I’ll get to it” text.
If a coworker or employee is owed something — a signature, an approval, a payment, a reply — that’s sitting on your desk, clear it this morning instead of letting it ride another day.
If your spouse or kid asked for something small and doable today, don’t say “later” out of habit. Stop, do the two-minute version right now, and tell them it’s done.
PrayerGod, when I’ve got what someone needs sitting right in my hand, give me the guts to hand it over today instead of stalling with “tomorrow.”
Keep this in your chest
“Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.”
