The Net You Set Catches You
Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
Proverbs 1:17
And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
Proverbs 1:18
So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
Proverbs 1:19
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
a net — the hidden kind set to catch an animal, not the kind you’d show it on purpose
-
a piece cut or broken off for yourself — a cut of money grabbed unjustly, not rightly earned
A resheth only works hidden — a bird that sees the net just flies around it, because even a bird isn’t dumb enough to walk into an obvious trap. But a man chasing batsa, a quick cut of money that isn’t really his, walks straight into the trap wide awake. He thinks he’s the one setting the snare on somebody else. He isn’t. The money he’s grabbing is the net, and he’s the bird.
IIWhat this actually means
A bird won’t walk into a trap it can see. You will — every time you take the shady shortcut because the payout looks good right now. The guy who skims off a client, fudges an invoice, or takes the “too easy” cash job isn’t getting over on anyone. He’s the bird flying straight at the net, except this time nobody even had to hide it from him. He saw it coming and went anyway, because the money blinded him to the trap.
IIIObey it today
If a client or deal today smells like a shortcut — fast cash, no paper trail, “don’t worry about it” — name it out loud to yourself before noon: “that’s a net, not a payday.” Then don’t take the bait.
Before you send an invoice or quote today, check it once for anything padded or not earned. If you find it, fix the number before you hit send.
If you’re holding a grudge-shaped plan to get back at someone today by taking something that’s theirs — money, credit, a client — kill the plan before lunch. Tell one person what you were about to do.
PrayerGod, when the easy money looks safe today, open my eyes to the net before I’m standing in it.
Keep this in your chest
“Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.”
