Words That Cut or Words That Cure
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
Proverbs 12:18
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Proverbs 12:19
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
from bata, “to speak rashly or thoughtlessly” — blurting words out before you’ve thought them through
-
a healing, a cure, health — the same word used for medicine that actually fixes something broken
Boteh isn’t just “rude talk” — it’s the specific picture of a guy running his mouth without engaging his brain first, the words coming out as fast as the feeling hits. That’s the sword. On the other side, marpe is medical language: the wise tongue doesn’t just avoid harm, it actively treats and closes a wound. Same mouth, two totally different jobs — weapon or medicine, and you pick which one every time you open it.
IIWhat this actually means
Some people talk before they think, and it cuts people like a blade — fast, sharp, and it leaves a mark. Other people think before they talk, and their words actually heal something. And here’s the kicker on truth (v.19): a lie feels powerful for about five minutes, then it’s gone — but a true word you said stands forever, because nobody ever has to walk it back.
IIIObey it today
Before you fire back a text or a reply today, read it once, then wait ten seconds before you hit send — that’s the gap between boteh and marpe.
When you talk to your spouse or your kid about something that’s bugging you, say the true thing plainly instead of a half-truth that’s easier in the moment — the true version is the one that’s still standing tomorrow.
If you catch yourself about to say something sharp to a coworker or a client today, swap it for one sentence that actually fixes the problem instead of just venting your frustration.
PrayerGod, put a guard on my mouth today so what comes out of it heals people instead of cutting them.
Keep this in your chest
“There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.”
