You Become Who You Walk With
He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
Proverbs 13:20
Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.
Proverbs 13:21
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
walketh — from a root meaning to go, to travel, to live a certain way; not a one-time visit, an ongoing direction
-
companion of — literally “one who pastures or grazes with”; the same word used for a shepherd feeding his flock
-
shall be destroyed — Niphal imperfect, “will be broken, will suffer harm”; a different root than roeh, but it sounds almost identical in Hebrew
Holek isn’t one hangout, it’s a direction you’re walking — a lifestyle, day after day. And roeh is the shepherd’s word: you don’t just stand near fools, you graze in the same field, eating what they’re eating. Then comes the gut-punch: the Hebrew word for “destroyed” (yeroa) sounds almost like the word for “companion” (roeh) that comes right before it — a deliberate echo in the sound of the words. The company becomes the breaking. Whoever you feed with is who you become.
IIWhat this actually means
This isn’t about being cold to people who mess up. It’s about who sets your pace every single day — who you eat lunch with, who’s blowing up your phone, whose opinion actually moves you. Verse 21 backs it up: trouble tracks down people who keep bad company on its own, without you chasing it. You don’t have to do anything wrong yourself — just keep grazing in the wrong field long enough, and the field changes you.
IIIObey it today
Before noon, name one person you talk to almost every day who pulls you toward laziness, complaining, or cutting corners — and give that conversation ten fewer minutes than you normally would.
Before noon, call or text one person you know is steady and straight, someone who’d tell you the truth instead of what you want to hear, and ask them one real question about a decision you’re facing.
Before noon, if a coworker or buddy starts talking you into skipping a task, cutting a corner, or trashing someone behind their back, say “nah, I’m good” out loud instead of just going along with it in your head.
PrayerGod, show me who I’m actually grazing next to today, and give me the guts to walk toward the ones who’ll make me sharper instead of dumber.
Keep this in your chest
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
Proverbs 13:20
