Give It Away, Get It Back
Everybody thinks holding money tighter makes you richer. Solomon says the opposite three times in a row: the guy who opens his hand ends up fat, and the guy who grips it ends up poor and cursed.
There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
Proverbs 11:24
The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
Proverbs 11:25
He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
Proverbs 11:26
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
to scatter — spread out on purpose, the same root used for a farmer scattering seed
-
literally “a soul of blessing” — the KJV’s “liberal soul”
Pazar isn’t “lose money by accident.” It’s a deliberate scattering, like a farmer throwing seed he’ll never see again as seed — on purpose, because he knows it’s the only way it comes back as a harvest. The man in this verse isn’t careless with his money. He’s throwing it out on purpose, and that’s exactly what makes it grow. The English says “liberal soul,” which sounds like a personality trait. The Hebrew says something stronger: this man’s whole soul is a blessing — pouring out on other people is just what he’s built for, not a nice extra habit. That’s why he “gets watered” back. You can’t out-give a setup God wired in on purpose.
IIWhat this actually means
Stop treating money and time like they vanish the second they leave your hand. Solomon says it three times in a row here: what you give away multiplies, what you clench dies, and the guy who won’t let go of what other people need ends up cursed by the very people he shorted. He’s not telling you to be reckless. He’s telling you opening your hand is how you get fed — not how you go broke.
IIIObey it today
When you get paid or handed cash today, give some of it away before you spend a dime on yourself — a bigger tip than it needs to be, gas money for somebody short, anything real.
When someone at work or in your family asks you for help today and it will actually cost you something — time, effort, money — say yes instead of hunting for the reason to say no.
Find the one thing you’re hoarding for no good reason — extra stock, idle cash, a favor you’re saving up to cash in later — and let go of it on purpose before the day is over.
PrayerGod, help me open my hand today instead of gripping tighter, and help me actually believe You’ll fill it back up.
Keep this in your chest
“The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”
Proverbs 11:24-26
