Slack Hand, Rich Hand
He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Proverbs 10:4
He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
Proverbs 10:5
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
a “slack hand” — the word doubles as both lazy AND deceitful. Idleness isn’t neutral in this word, it’s a form of cheating people
-
diligent, but the root sense is “sharp” or “cut in” — like a blade that’s been ground to an edge, not just a guy who shows up
The Hebrew doesn’t just contrast lazy versus hardworking. Remiyyah (slack) is the same word used elsewhere for a deceitful tongue — so a slack hand isn’t just tired, it’s quietly cheating everyone who’s counting on you. Charuts (diligent) pictures a blade sharpened to a point, not someone merely “trying.” Verse 5 then makes it about timing: the wise son gathers while the grain is still standing, in summer, before it’s too late. Wisdom here isn’t working hard in general — it’s working hard at the actual window God gave you, not after it closes.
IIWhat this actually means
A slack hand isn’t just “lazy,” it’s a hidden way of letting people down — your family, your boss, your customers, even yourself. And diligence isn’t grinding all the time on everything; it’s being sharp enough to see the harvest while it’s happening and move on it, instead of sleeping through the one window you had. Poverty and shame in this passage aren’t bad luck. They’re what’s left over after you let the moment pass.
IIIObey it today
Before noon, do the one task at work you’ve been dragging your feet on — the email, the call, the job you keep pushing to “later” — and finish it first, before you check your phone.
Today, when you get paid or get cash in hand, set a specific amount aside on purpose before you spend any of it, instead of telling yourself you’ll save “whatever’s left.”
Pick the one thing at home you’ve been putting off — the bill, the repair, the phone call to a family member — and do it today instead of telling yourself there’ll be a better time.
PrayerLord, give me the guts to move now instead of waiting for a better moment that isn’t coming — make my hands sharp today, not slack.
Keep this in your chest
“He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”
Proverbs 10:4
