Sweat Pays, Talk Doesn't

Every hour of real work leaves you something extra. Every hour spent just talking about it leaves you short.

Listen 0:00 / 3:40

In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

Proverbs 14:23

IThe Hebrew, opened up

  • עֶצֶב etseb H6089

toil, hard effort, even pain — sweat-and-strain work, not a hobby

  • מוֹתָר mothar H4195

real gain, surplus, something left over — a rare word, used only a few times in the whole Bible, for actual profit

  • דְבַר devar H1697

word, talk, a matter — here it’s just words about something, with nothing behind them

  • שְׂפָתַיִם sephatayim H8193

lips — speech that stays on the lips and never turns into action

  • מַחְסוֹר machsor H4270

lack, need, running short — ending up with less instead of more

Etseb is real toil — the sweaty, hands-dirty kind of work, sometimes even the word for pain. Put that into a day and you get mothar, a rare word that shows up only a couple other times in the whole Bible, for actual leftover gain — real surplus, not hype. But devar sephatayim, “talk of the lips,” is the opposite input: words that never leave the mouth and become work. And that doesn’t just produce nothing — it produces machsor, running short, ending the day with less than you started. The verse isn’t saying talk is neutral. It’s saying talk alone actively costs you.

IIWhat this actually means

This verse is blunt about something most people would rather not hear: work leaves you richer, and talk doesn’t. Not “talk is a waste of time” — talk actually tends toward less, toward running short. You can spend an hour explaining your plan, hyping up an idea, telling everybody what you’re about to do, and when you’re done talking you’ve got exactly what you started with, minus the hour. This verse says it’s worse than that — all that talk actually drains you. Every minute spent describing the work instead of doing it is a minute you could’ve put into something that pays off. The guy who just does the job, even the boring parts, walks away with more than he had. The guy who just talks about the job walks away with less. If you’ve got more mouth than hands on something today, flip it before the day’s over.

IIIObey it today

  1. Before lunch, pick the one task you’ve been talking about instead of doing — open the first tab, dial the first number, make the first cut — and keep going until it’s actually moving.

  2. If you catch yourself explaining your plan to a coworker, your spouse, or your phone today instead of starting it, cut the explanation short and spend that same minute doing the first step instead.

  3. At your next meeting or call today, say one sentence less than you planned, and use the time you saved to actually move the work forward instead.

PrayerGod, don’t let me talk my way around real work today — give me the push to actually do the thing instead of just describing it.

Keep this in your chest

“In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.”
