Quick Money Melts, Slow Money Grows

That fast, easy money that shows up out of nowhere has a way of disappearing just as fast. The boring pile you build one paycheck at a time doesn’t.

Listen 0:00 / 3:36

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

Proverbs 13:11

IThe Hebrew, opened up

  • הוֹן hon H1952

wealth, riches, substance — the actual pile of money or stuff a man has built up

  • יִמְעָט yim'at H4591

to shrink, dwindle, become few — here it’s wealth that keeps getting smaller until it’s gone

  • וְקֹבֵץ qobets H6908

to gather, collect, pick up little by little — the picture is a man bending down again and again for one handful at a time, not one big haul

  • יַרְבֶּה yarbeh H7235

to multiply, increase, grow large — not a lucky jump, a steady climb that keeps going up

Qobets is the picture here — not a man who got lucky, a man bent over again and again, scooping up one handful of grain after another until it’s a pile. That slow, repetitive, unglamorous motion is exactly what yarbeh rewards: it doesn’t mean a windfall, it means something that keeps multiplying because it keeps getting fed. On the other side, hon gotten the easy way doesn’t just sit still — yim’at means it actively shrinks, bleeds out, gets smaller on its own. Same money, two completely different futures, depending on how it showed up.

IIWhat this actually means

Everybody’s seen both kinds of money. The guy who wins big or finds an angle and has nothing to show for it a year later. And the guy doing the same unglamorous work week after week who quietly ends up solid. This verse says that’s not luck — it’s built into how the two kinds of money behave. Money that shows up without real work behind it doesn’t just risk running out, it actively dwindles, like it’s leaking. Money gathered by labor — one handful, one shift, one invoice at a time — doesn’t just hold steady, it multiplies. If you’re waiting on a break today, stop. Go pick up the next handful instead.

IIIObey it today

  1. Before you spend one dollar of today’s money, physically move a set amount — even $10 — into savings or a separate envelope. Do it before noon, before anything else touches that money.

  2. If a “quick money” pitch lands in front of you today — a bet, a flip, a scheme, a shortcut that skips the actual work — say no to it out loud and put that same hour into one piece of real, billable work instead.

  3. Tell one coworker or your kid today about a specific time slow, steady work actually paid off for you — not a lecture, one real story, before lunch.

PrayerGod, give me the patience to gather little by little today instead of chasing a shortcut that won’t last.

Keep this in your chest

“Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.”
