Work Your Own Dirt, Don't Rush the Rich

Listen 0:00 / 3:14

He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.

Proverbs 28:19

A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.

Proverbs 28:20

IThe Hebrew, opened up

  • עֹבֵד abad H5647

to work, to serve, to till — the same root used for a servant’s daily labor

  • אִישׁ אֱמוּנוֹת ish emunoth H530

literally “a man of faithfulnesses” — firmness, steadiness, someone who can be leaned on

Abad is the word for a servant’s work — showing up and putting your hands in the dirt, day after day. Solomon isn’t talking about luck. He’s talking about the guy who does the unglamorous, repeated work on what’s actually his, versus the guy chasing “vain persons” — empty men with empty schemes. One produces bread. The other produces poverty, guaranteed. Emunah means firmness — it’s the same root behind “amen,” something solid you can stand on. The verse doesn’t say “a lucky man” or “a smart man” abounds with blessings. It says a firm, steady, keeps-his-word man does. And it puts “maketh haste to be rich” directly against that steadiness — hurry and integrity don’t share a lane.

IIWhat this actually means

Stop looking for the shortcut. Work the actual ground in front of you — your actual job, your actual land, your actual responsibilities — instead of chasing whatever get-rich scheme or empty promise just walked by. Steadiness, not speed, is what God calls faithful. The man in a hurry to get rich is, by definition, cutting a corner somewhere, and this verse says he won’t get away clean.

IIIObey it today

  1. Before you check your phone for the next “opportunity” or side hustle pitch, spend the first 30 minutes of your workday on the actual task in front of you — the boring, real one that pays your actual bills.

  2. If a coworker or a text message today pitches you a fast-money deal (crypto tip, “guaranteed” flip, a friend’s MLM), say out loud “I’m not in a hurry to get rich” and let that be the whole answer — no research rabbit hole, no “let me think about it.”

  3. Pick one task at work or home you’ve been putting off because it’s slow and unglamorous, and finish it today instead of starting something new and exciting.

PrayerGod, give me the guts to do the slow, boring work today instead of chasing a shortcut.

Keep this in your chest

“A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.”
