Let Tomorrow Talk, Let Someone Else Brag

Two verses, same warning: quit running your mouth about things you don’t control — tomorrow’s outcome, or your own worth. Let the day prove itself. Let other people say what’s true about you.

Listen 0:00 / 3:16

Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

Proverbs 27:1

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

Proverbs 27:2

IThe Hebrew, opened up

  • תִּתְהַלֵּל tithhallel H1984

boast yourself — from halal, “to shine, to praise, to make a show of”; this is that same word turned inward, praise aimed at your own name

  • מָחָר machar H4279

tomorrow — the next day, plain and simple, a day you have no claim on yet

  • נָכְרִי nokri H5237

stranger, foreigner — someone with no stake in you and no reason to flatter you

Halal is the exact word the Psalms use for praising God — “Hallelujah” is built on it. Here it’s pointed at yourself, about a day that hasn’t happened. You’re taking a word built for glory and spending it on a paycheck that hasn’t cleared. The verse doesn’t just say “let someone else say it” — it picks the person with the least reason to lie: a stranger. If a guy who owes you nothing tells you that you did good work, that’s worth more than every word you could say about yourself put together.

IIWhat this actually means

You don’t run tomorrow. You don’t run how good you look, either. Both of those get proven by what actually happens and what other people actually say — not by you talking first. Every time you talk like a deal is done before it’s done, or talk yourself up before anyone else has, you’re grabbing something that isn’t yours to grab yet.

IIIObey it today

  1. When you talk to a client, a buyer, or your crew today about something that isn’t finished — a job, a sale, a fix — don’t say “it’s locked in.” Say what you’re actually doing about it and leave the outcome open. You don’t own tomorrow yet.

  2. If you land a real win today — a sale closes, a number comes in good, a fix holds — don’t post it or brag on it before noon. Sit on it. If it’s real, it’ll still be true at dinner, and someone else can be the one who brings it up.

  3. When someone compliments your work today, say “thanks, appreciate it” and stop talking. Don’t chase it with three more things you did to top it.

PrayerGod, help me talk about today’s work without pretending I own tomorrow, and keep my mouth shut enough that somebody else’s word about me means more than mine.

Keep this in your chest

“Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.”
