Don't Sign for Someone Else's Debt
A good man will help you. A wise man knows the difference between helping you and taking on your debt as his own. This is Solomon telling you where that line is.
Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.
Proverbs 22:26
If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
Proverbs 22:27
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
to strike or clap — the ancient handshake that sealed a bargain; here, agreeing to back someone else’s loan
-
the palm of the hand — “strike hands” is literally “strike palm”
-
to pledge, to stand as surety — putting yourself up as the backup payer on someone else’s debt
-
bed, the place you sleep — the last thing a poor man has that a creditor could still legally take
Taqa kaph, “striking the palm,” was the ancient world’s signature on a contract — you clapped hands with a man and you were now legally on the hook. Arab means you’ve made yourself the pledge, the collateral, the backup plan for someone else’s debt. Solomon isn’t telling you not to help people. He’s telling you not to hand a stranger’s creditor a legal claim on your own bed — on your own house, your own future — because you couldn’t say no in the moment.
IIWhat this actually means
Cosigning a loan, backing a friend’s business debt, putting your name on someone else’s obligation — that’s arab. It feels generous in the moment. Solomon says look two steps ahead: if that person can’t pay, the debt doesn’t disappear, it walks straight to your door. He’s not against generosity. Give the man cash if you’ve got it to lose. Don’t give him your signature, because your signature can take your bed.
IIIObey it today
If someone asks you to cosign, backstop, or “just put your name on” anything today — a loan, a lease, a car note — tell them no, and offer what you can actually afford to lose instead.
Before noon, check if you’re already on the hook for someone else’s debt (cosigned loan, shared account, a “just until payday” IOU). If you are, find out today what it would cost you if they stopped paying.
If a friend or family member is drowning in debt today, help with a real number you can hand over and walk away from — not a signature that follows you home.
PrayerGod, give me the spine to say no to a bad deal even when it feels unkind, and the sense to help people without putting my own house on the line.
Keep this in your chest
“Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?”
