The Slow Way Is the Real Way
The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.
Proverbs 21:5
The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.
Proverbs 21:6
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
to hurry, to press, to rush toward something before it’s ready — the man in verse 5 who is “hasty”
-
a puff of breath, a vapor — something that looks solid for a second and is gone; “vanity” in verse 6
‘Uts isn’t just “moving fast” — it’s forcing a thing before its time, grabbing at the outcome without doing the work that gets you there. That’s the man in verse 5 who ends up with nothing. Verse 6 shows you what his hurry usually looks like up close: money gotten by a lying tongue. The Hebrew doesn’t call that money fake — it calls it hebel, a breath, a vapor. It’s real enough to hold for a second. Then it’s gone, because nothing built on a lie has any weight to it.
IIWhat this actually means
These two verses are one thought. The guy who won’t slow down to plan is the same guy who’ll lie to get paid faster — impatience and dishonesty come from the same place: not wanting to wait for the real thing. Diligence means you sit down and actually think through how the money, the job, or the deal is supposed to work before you move. Hasty means you skip that step because waiting feels like losing. And when you skip it, the shortcut that gets you paid today is usually a lie you told somebody — a stretched invoice, a promise you can’t keep, a number that isn’t quite true. It feels like cash in your hand. It’s actually a breath. It slips through your fingers because it was never really yours.
IIIObey it today
Before you send that bid, that price, or that “yes I can have it done by Friday” text today, stop for ten minutes and actually write out the steps — don’t let the rush skip the plan.
If there’s a number today — an invoice, a quote, a report of hours worked — that you were about to round up or stretch to get paid faster, write down the true number instead and send that one.
When a “make quick money” text, DM, or ad hits your phone today, treat it like smoke: don’t click it, don’t reply to it, don’t pass it on to anyone else either.
PrayerLord, when I want the fast way out today, give me the patience to make a real plan instead of rushing, and the guts to tell the truth about money even when a lie would pay quicker.
Keep this in your chest
“The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.”
