Pride Goes First, Then You Fall
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Proverbs 16:19
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
exaltation, pride, arrogance — the swelling-up of yourself above where you actually stand — This isn’t just “feeling confident.” Ga’own is the specific move of exalting yourself past your real place. That’s the thing that snaps first — before the actual fall ever shows up.
-
low, brought down, humble, abased — Shaphal isn’t weakness — it’s a chosen, willing lowness. The verse says staying low on purpose with plain people beats standing tall over a pile of loot with proud people.
IIWhat this actually means
Pride doesn’t wait for the fall to show up — it does its damage the moment it swells (ga’own). By the time you’re actually flat on your face, the real break already happened earlier, in your head, when you started thinking you were above the room. Verse 19 is the trade God is offering: you can stay low and plain (shaphal) with regular people, or you can stand tall over a bigger pile with people who think they’re better than everyone else. God says the small, humble pile wins. Not because money or wins are bad — because the swelling that comes with them is what actually kills you.
IIIObey it today
Before noon, when you’re right about something at work, say it once and let it sit. Don’t repeat yourself three times to make sure everybody knows you won.
Before noon, if you land a win today — a sale, a good number, a compliment — say a quiet “thank you God” before you tell a single coworker or post it anywhere.
Before noon, in your first real conversation today, ask the other person a question about their day before you say anything about yours.
PrayerGod, when I want to be the smart one in the room today, pull me down to the quiet, humble spot before pride gets me first.
Keep this in your chest
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
