Get Wisdom Before You Move
Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
Proverbs 15:22
A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!
Proverbs 15:23
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
to advise, consult, deliberate — the root behind “counsel” and “counsellors” here. In the verse it’s the plural participle (those who sit down and reason a thing through with you)
-
time — specifically the appointed, fitting, right moment for a thing, not just any moment
Ya’ats isn’t just “somebody’s opinion.” It’s the deliberate work of talking a plan through with someone before you commit to it — weighing it from an angle you can’t see because you’re too close to it. The verse says a plan made alone, in your own head, is the one most likely to fall apart. “Due season” is eth — the right moment, not just the true moment. A true word said at the wrong time can still land wrong. The verse is pairing two skills: knowing what to say, and knowing when to say it.
IIWhat this actually means
These two verses go together. Verse 22 says: don’t decide big stuff solo — run it past someone first, because your own head is a blind spot you can’t see out of. Verse 23 says: even when you’ve got the right words, hold them until the moment is actually right. A good answer dropped at the wrong second can do more damage than saying nothing. Wisdom here isn’t just having the right take — it’s checking your take with someone else, and then waiting for the right second to say it.
IIIObey it today
Before you send that text, email, or make that call about money, a job move, or a relationship problem today, stop and run it past one actual person first — not a group chat, one person who’ll tell you the truth.
When you’re about to say the “right” thing to your spouse, kid, or coworker today and they’re mid-meltdown, distracted, or already defensive, hold it. Wait for a calmer minute instead of firing it off just because it’s true.
Next time you catch yourself about to make a call solo because asking feels slow or makes you look unsure, ask anyway — even a two-minute “what do you think” text to one person counts.
PrayerGod, slow me down enough to ask before I decide and wait before I speak — help me actually do it today.
Keep this in your chest
“Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”
