Get Counsel, Submit Your Plans
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
Proverbs 19:20
There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
Proverbs 19:21
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
counsel — advice from outside your own head; input you didn’t come up with yourself
-
instruction — correction you actually take, not just politely hear
-
devices — the plans, schemes, and figured-out purposes you build in your own mind, good or bad
Etsah is counsel that comes from outside you — somebody else’s read on your situation. Solomon puts it next to musar, correction you actually let land, not just tolerate. Then verse 21 flips to machashabah: the plans stacking up inside your own skull, the ones that feel airtight because you built them. The verse doesn’t say your plans are bad. It says they’re not the last word — God’s etsah, His counsel, is what actually stands when yours doesn’t.
IIWhat this actually means
You’ve got a plan for today, this week, this year. Fine — you should. But you’re not required to run it solo, and you’re not guaranteed it survives contact with reality. The guy who won’t take advice and won’t hold his plans loose is setting himself up to get blindsided. The guy who lets other people talk into his plan, and leaves room for God to override it, is the one who’s actually wise by the time it’s all over.
IIIObey it today
Before you commit to anything money-related today — a purchase, a loan, saying yes to a client’s terms — call or text one person who’ll actually tell you the truth, not just cheer you on, and wait for their answer before you pull the trigger.
Pick the one plan you’re most locked into this week and say the real version of it out loud to your spouse or a friend before noon — not the polished version, the actual plan — and let them poke a hole in it if there’s one to find.
When you catch yourself already deciding how today’s going to go, stop for ten seconds and say, out loud or under your breath, “Lord, if this isn’t Your plan, shut the door” — then keep moving, but hold it loose enough to let go if He does.
PrayerGod, I’ve got my own plans stacked up in my head today — help me actually listen when someone corrects me, and help me hold my plans loose enough to let You override them.
Keep this in your chest
“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”
