Take Correction Over Cash
Wisdom is standing at the city gate today, yelling over the noise, telling you flat out which one to pick when a raise and a hard truth show up on the same day.
Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
Proverbs 8:10
For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
Proverbs 8:11
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
instruction — but the root is “chastisement”: this isn’t a lecture, it’s correction that stings on the way in
-
rubies — top-shelf red gemstones; scholars aren’t 100% sure if it means rubies, coral, or pearls, but everyone agreed it meant “the good stuff you show off”
Musar is the same word used for disciplining a kid or straightening out a soldier. It’s not neutral information — it’s someone telling you you’re doing it wrong, on purpose, so you’ll stop. Wisdom is telling you to rank that above a bigger paycheck. Whatever peninim exactly were, the point lands the same either way: this is the thing a rich man keeps in a locked box. Wisdom says put your actual instruction — the correction that makes you better — above even that.
IIWhat this actually means
This isn’t a guilt trip about loving money. Wisdom isn’t anti-cash — a few verses later she brags her own fruit beats gold too. This is about what you reach for first when you can only grab one thing. Cash and rubies get spent, get stolen, or just sit in a box. Getting corrected right — actually hearing it and changing — is the one thing you keep for good. Most guys will take the raise and dodge the correction. Wisdom says do the opposite: take the correction like it’s worth more, because it is.
IIIObey it today
When someone corrects you today — your boss, a client, your spouse, whoever — don’t defend yourself first. Say “you’re right, I’ll fix it,” and actually fix the thing before lunch.
Before you buy anything non-essential today, stop and ask “does this make me sharper, or does it just look shiny.” If it’s just shiny, skip it and put that money toward something that actually teaches you a skill.
Call or text one person who knows more than you about your job or your money today and ask them one real, specific question before noon — not small talk, something you actually need answered.
PrayerLord, when I get corrected today, help me take it instead of arguing, and help me want to get wiser more than I want more stuff.
Keep this in your chest
“Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.”
