Work Like Nobody's Watching
No boss standing over you, no manager checking the clock, no one cracking the whip — and the ant still gets the work done before it’s needed. If a bug can do that without supervision, so can you.
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
Proverbs 6:6
Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
Proverbs 6:7
Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
Proverbs 6:8
IThe Hebrew, opened up
-
sluggard — not just tired for a day, but stuck; a settled habit of dragging your feet
-
ant — a small, unimpressive creature that still gets the job done with zero supervision
Atsel isn’t a guy who’s had a rough week — it’s a settled condition, a man who has made stalling his default. The verse doesn’t send him to a wise elder or a hard-driving boss for a lecture; it sends him to an insect. The nemalah has no ruler, no overseer, nobody standing over her clocking her hours — and she still stores up in summer what she’ll need in winter. The rebuke isn’t “you’re weak.” It’s “you have less excuse than a bug.”
IIWhat this actually means
Stop waiting for someone to make you move. The ant proves that the work still needs doing whether or not anyone’s checking on you. If you only produce when the boss is looking, the client is waiting, or someone’s about to notice, you’re not actually diligent — you’re just afraid of getting caught being lazy. God’s asking for the other kind: the kind that works because the work is real, not because someone’s watching.
IIIObey it today
Before noon, do the one task you’ve been putting off that nobody is tracking — the invoice you haven’t sent, the call you’ve been dodging, the mess in the truck bed — and do it now, with zero deadline forcing you.
At work today, before lunch, handle one boring job that isn’t due yet and that no one’s checking on — restock, follow up the lead, clean the report — exactly like your boss is standing behind you, even though he isn’t.
Before noon, do one thing that sets up tomorrow while you’re thinking of it — order the part, text the supplier, block the time on the calendar — so tomorrow-you isn’t starting from behind.
PrayerGod, give me the guts to work when nobody’s watching instead of waiting for someone else to make me move.
Keep this in your chest
“Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:”
