Guard Your Heart

Solomon zooms in from the whole-life pep talk to four body parts: your heart, your mouth, your eyes, your feet. Guard the source, and the rest falls in line.

Listen 0:00 / 3:21

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:23

Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

Proverbs 4:24

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Proverbs 4:25

Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Proverbs 4:26

IThe Hebrew, opened up

  • נָצַר natsar H5341

keep — a guard’s word, used of a watchman on a wall or a besieged city standing post

  • לֵב leb H3820

heart — not just feelings, but the whole inner command center: will, mind, and gut together

  • תּוֹצָאוֹת towtsa'ot H8444

issues — literally the “goings-out,” the springs a river flows from

Natsar is not a casual “watch out” — it’s the word for a soldier standing guard duty on a wall, staying alert because something real is at stake. Your leb isn’t just your emotions; it’s the control room where your choices actually get made. And towtsa’ot pictures your heart as a spring: whatever’s down in the water table is what comes out at the tap. Guard duty on the heart isn’t optional self-care — it’s the one post that determines everything downstream.

IIWhat this actually means

Stand guard on your own heart like it’s a wall somebody could climb over — because it is. What you let sit in there long enough eventually comes out your mouth, shows up in where your eyes wander, and shapes the path your feet actually walk. This isn’t “think positive.” It’s: whatever you’re feeding your heart today is the water that’s going to come out of the tap tomorrow, so watch the well, not just the faucet.

IIIObey it today

  1. Before you open any app, phone, or feed this morning, name out loud one thing you’re deliberately putting into your heart today instead — a verse, a prayer, one true thing about God. That’s guard duty, not vibes.

  2. The next time you’re about to fire off a sharp text, comment, or reply today, stop and ask “is this a froward mouth talking, or my actual heart?” — then rewrite it once before you send it.

  3. Pick one decision on your plate today — a purchase, a conversation, a next move at work — and physically write down where that path leads before you take the first step, instead of drifting into it.

PrayerLord, help me actually stand guard over my heart today instead of just letting whatever comes through the gate walk right in.

Keep this in your chest

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
