Plan It, Work It, Prove It

The woman in this poem doesn’t buy on a whim, doesn’t work half-hearted, and doesn’t call a thing good until she’s actually checked. Three verses, three moves: think it through, put your back into it, then look at the real result.

Listen 0:00 / 3:46

She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

Proverbs 31:16

She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

Proverbs 31:17

She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

Proverbs 31:18

IThe Hebrew, opened up

  • זָמְמָה zamemah (root zamam) H2161

to plan on purpose, to fix your mind on a thing before you act — not a glance, a calculation

  • טָעֲמָה ta'amah (root ta'am) H2938

to taste, to test, to know by trying it — not by assuming

Zamam is the same root used elsewhere for scheming and plotting — here it’s aimed at something good, but the intensity is the same. She doesn’t stumble into buying that field. She does the math, weighs the cost, and only then puts money down. This isn’t gut-feel; it’s a decision made with her eyes open. Ta’am is literally the word for tasting food. She doesn’t declare her business “good” because she hopes it is or because it felt busy this week — she tastes it, tests it, checks the actual result. That’s why the next line is the lamp staying lit: she’s up late looking at what’s real, not what she wishes were true.

IIWhat this actually means

Three moves, in order. First, zamam: think it through before you commit — run the numbers, don’t just feel it out. Second, gird your arms: once you’ve decided, work it for real, not halfway. Third, ta’am: don’t call it a win until you’ve actually checked the result against reality. A lot of guys skip straight from “feels right” to “I’m in,” and skip checking altogether once they’re in. This woman does neither. She thinks first, works hard, and then tests — and keeps testing, even late at night when it’d be easier to just assume it’s fine.

IIIObey it today

  1. Before you say yes to anything that costs real money today — a truck payment, a new tool, taking on a client — stop for five minutes and write down what it actually costs you and what it actually brings back. That’s zamam: deciding with your head, not your gut.

  2. Whatever job is right in front of you this morning, put your phone in another room and give it one full hour of real, focused work — no half-effort, no checking out mentally. That’s girding your arms for real.

  3. Before lunch, go check one thing you already started — a sale, a repair, a project — against the actual result, not how you feel about it. Pull the real number or ask the person the real question. That’s ta’am: tasting it to see if it’s actually good, not just hoping it is.

PrayerLord, help me think clearly before I commit to something today, work it hard once I’ve decided, and be honest with myself about whether it’s actually working instead of just hoping.

Keep this in your chest

“She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.”
